Fun with Rock Band 3 Pro Bass

Rock Band 3 Pro Bass Mode (Image by karaokefreak)

One interesting application of the hardware mentioned in my last posting is the use of the Roland GR-55's tracking capabilities and its GK to MIDI output. This makes it possible to turn any real guitar or bass into a MIDI instrument, once a GK pickup is added. This pickup technology, often mentioned as hex pickup, is able to read the individual six strings of a guitar or individual 4 to 6 strings of a bass.

This is almost enough to use the augmented instrument as controller for playing Rock Band 3's pro mode tracks. The MIDI output has to be supplemented by some extra MIDI messages, before it is fed into the MadCatz Rock Band 3 adapter.

One way to achieve this is using a computer with a USB to MIDI converter. The necessary software can be found at the game2midi project. It is still under development, but already allows to play songs using your own instrument.

It will not offer the same comfort as the all-in-one Fender Squier Stratocaster for RB3 guitar/controller (no fretboard hand position tracking, more components and cables) and is several times more expensive (high quality pickup, GK to MIDI conversion is only one feature of the many features of the GR-55 guitar/bass synthesizer), but again, you can apply this to any guitar/bass and right now it is the only means to get a Pro Bass controller into your hands!
